Project Description: Asset Management

Client: General Motors

Project Brief:
The early part of 2008 saw Egniol’s Environmental & Water Department complete an asset management exercise at General Motors Manufacturing Ellesmere Port (GMMEP). The principal aim of the project was to provide General Motors with an understanding of their potential risks and liabilities associated with the site’s current and historic users.

Egniol achieved this task, by reviewing previous information relating to the site in the initial desktop phase, such as historical maps, previous consultants reports, specific GMMEP environmental information etc., which provided the basis of a targeted intrusive site investigation. Samples of the soils and groundwater were taken and submitted to UKAS and MCERTS laboratory that were subsequently used in risk assessing the site for potential risks from contamination to human health and the wider environment. The risk assessment then enabled areas of the site to be ranked as ‘high, medium or low’ in terms of warranting further attention. In addition to the risk process, an estimation of additional costs could be provided, depending on whether areas required further site investigation, site specific quantitative risk assessment (QRA) or remediation. All phases of the project were supervised by a principal consultant and completed in accordance with GMMEP strict contractor specifications and requirements, up-to-date legislation, guidance and approved codes of practice.
