Project Description: Sustainable Environmental Enhancement

Client: Ron Redmayne

Introduction

Glanmorfa Lodge on the Isle of Anglesey is a site covering a 15 hectare area close to Malltraeth marsh, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (A.O.N.B.)
It lies in a transition zone between lowland marsh and a rocky escarpment, resulting in a diversity of landscape and ecology,

Project Brief

Egniol were commissioned by Mr Ron Redmayne to undertake design and planning and to assist in the overall management of the 'Glanmorfa Lodge Wildlife Experience'. This involved pond construction, broadleaved tree planting, trail construction, access improvements and dry stone walling.

The project allows visitors to learn about the wildlife of the adjacent marsh while enjoying the newly developed landscape. Egniol's involvement began in 2001 and continues today as a second phase progresses.

Project Delivery
The completed Glanmorfa Lodge Wildlife Experience will comprise two large-scale wildlife ponds, newly planted trees and shrubs, sign posted educational trails, improved site infrastructure incorporating traditional skills and bird hides.

Egniol have assisted in guiding the project through two stages of development, managing design and planning issues in close consultation with statutory consultees and interested third parties. We have also help raised part of the funding for the project.

The overall focus of the scheme has been to encourage greater biodiversity while developing the site through sustainable means as a dynamic, educational and recreational facility. The adjoining holiday cottage business will also benefit from the increased appeal and popularity of the site.

By using stone retrieved from the site for walls and re-using the clays extracted during pond construction, the scheme illustrates the practical application of sustainable techniques.

The emerging development now stands as a prime example of a sensitively managed environmental development, harmonious and yet distinct from the adjoining natural Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
